Accomplishments

Each year we are privileged to affect positive change in the Pasteur community and directly in the lives of Pasteur students! Here are lists of our accomplishments by year. We hope that you will help us add to this list in years to come.

2019

  • TUTORS – We have 27 tutors for the school year, but we can always use more! Do you have an hour?
  • DIARY OF ANNE FRANK- Every year we take the 6th Graders to see a live performance of The Diary of Anne Frank. Before and after we go, we spend time talking about the Holocaust and give each student a copy of the book, Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl. Because most of the kids have never heard of the Holocaust, it’s always an enlightening experience.
  • READING PROGRAM – What better way can there be to share a love for literature than reading to an entire class and giving a book to each child for their own personal library. Each week a volunteer takes two copies of a book to read, leaving one for the class library and giving one to a child to take home. By the end of the school year, every child gets a book!
  • ART CLUB – Art class, as we remember it, is no longer included in the school day. So we have an after-school art class with a professional artist. Children who attend have a chance to express themselves and have a great time doing it!
  • CAREER DAY – Every year we recruit volunteer speakers from all walks of life to come to school and talk about their careers. The kids have had a chance to listen and talk to judges, nurses, journalists, engineers, designers, dentists, lawyers, and more. We’ve captivated the minds of the students with conversation and demonstrations, including performing surgery on a pig’s foot!
  • PAULA MARKS KALT BUTTERFLY PROJECT- When Spring comes, the kids look forward each year to the Butterfly Project. We provide the butterfly habitat and the larvae for students to learn the life cycle close up. In 2019, we had the first all-school “Butterfly Release” on the school lawn. It was a great day that we hope to repeat every year.
  • 6 th GRADE PROMOTION GIFT – It has been our pleasure to give the 6 th Graders a gift as they move on to middle school. For years we gave each student a dictionary, but in this technical world, we now give Amazon Fire Kindle tablets. The best part is that we don’t wait until they’re leaving Pasteur to give them out. Beginning in January, the kids get to use them in class to improve their academic skills under the guidance of the teacher. At the Promotion Ceremony in June, each student is given their tablet and a case to take home.
  • SUMMER IN THE CITY – For several years, we’ve been able to fund a six week summer program operated by Summer in the City. Every Friday, the children had the
opportunity to go on field trips all over Detroit to play, paint, plant, do sports and learn. In addition, we provide a two-week summer camp which included breakfast and lunch.
  • ROBOTICS – We provided an afternoon of fun and instruction with the help of The Robot Garage of Birmingham. 5th and 6th graders had a blast learning robotics and
team-building skills. The kids built robots from legos and then had a chance to compete against each other.

2018

  •  20 volunteers tutored students from First Grade and up. The Green Acres Association has joined us in providing tutors!
  • Our First Grade Reading Program gave 180 books to students and their classrooms
  • We started the first school newspaper in many years. What’s Poppin Pasteur involves many stuents with writing, interviewing, taking photos and team work. 400 copies were sold at a penny each.
  • Career Day brought many new career ideas for the students including an automotive engineer and a surgeon.
  • Earth Day brought 14 volunteers to discuss ways to save the Earth which each class. Every student received a packet of seeds to plant.
  • 6th graders received Amazon Fire Kindles to download educational apps.
  • The Green Acres Association organized Field Day in which we helped by providing gym equipment.
  • 60 families in need received large boxes of turkeys, food, gift cards and books for Christmas.

2017

  •  MOSAIC PROJECT – Because of generous friends of Pasteur, every student in the school was involved in creating a 15′ x 3′ glass mosaic for the Detroit Public Library on Woodward Avenue. The students submitted drawings about the Earth and artist Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan designed the final mosaic. Each student was taught how to help create the mosaic gluing in 12,000 colorful pieces of glass. There is a smaller mosaic they also made in the school.
  • MOSAIC DEDICATION at the Detroit Public Library. Four buses of students went for the dedication of their mosaic with a pizza party. It was the first time visiting the library for many students.
  • SIMPLY SMART KIDS parenting program. The parents thought it was a great program to learn how to engage their children in meaningful conversation. We provided meals, books, bags, t-shirts for the parents and children for the program.
  • THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK– March, 2017. We took the 6th graders by bus, as we do each year, to the Berman Theatre in West Bloomfield to see the Jewish Ensemble Theatre’s production of the play. Wendy Wagenheim spoke to the students a week before the play to set the tone. Marcy Feldman spoke to the students after to answer questions about
the Holocaust, the Civil Rights Movement and the link between Jewish people and African American people.
  • SUMMER IN THE CITY – We brought in SITC to create a mural in our Stoepel hallway. The little kids love the fun art!

Past Highlights

Here are a few of our highlights, famous visitors, and interesting acomplishments from yesteryear.

We lent the students $100 to build a lemonade stand, market, make and sell the lemonade. Senator Levin and one of his daughters came to visit the school.

June 2013 – The Lemonade Stand!
